Rough Pump / Hi Vacuum Pump, what's the difference ? |

Hewlett-Packard / Agilent benchtop mass spectrometers (MSDs) must have two vacuum pumps. A "rough" pump and a "high vacuum" pump. Generally, all MSDs have Edwards brand rotary pumps as rough pumps. They are usually under the bench on the floor. If you are lucky, they are inside a cabinet to keep the noise down. These "rough" pumps are responsible for pumping away the output of the "high vacuum" pumps. Sometimes their power cords (see FAQ) are plugged into the back of the MSD and sometimes the power cords are plugged directly into a wall outlet. The "high vacuum" pump is either a diffusion pump or a turbo pump (see FAQ) and is connected directly to the MSD manifold, either at the back of the MSD or underneath the MSD manifold.
