What is "backstreaming" ? |

Backstreaming is a horrible, horrible thing. Generally its when a whole bunch of oil (from the rough pump or the high vacuum pump) ends up in the mass spectrometer manifold. Backstreaming happens all the time, generally it happens when the mass spec is not allowed to cool properly before venting and when you vent from the wrong place. Some times it is just a very thin film on the manifold near the turbo/diffusion pump inlet. Worse case is when oil is dripping from the quads and the source.
